Monkeys. In. Space.

If you read yesterday's post, you're aware that I was challenged to create some drawings based on the phrases that are created when you remove the commas from Billy Joel's itemized "We Didn't Start the Fire" lyrics.

Today we're going for "Space Monkey Mafia".

I planned on at least three characters but I sort of ran out of time and energy.  I have a full time job, people, gimmie a break.

I also need to give them some gangster/mafia accessories to fit more with the theme.  Somewhat threatening primates in not-NASA-approved suits are as good as we're getting for today.

I Didn't Start This Idea

Yesterday it was suggested to me by my friend Jim that some of the lyrics to Sir William Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire" lend themselves quite nicely to nonsensical drawings, assuming you remove some commas.

For example, "Ole Miss, John Glenn..." If you mix up the syllabic emphasis in that phrase to sound like "Old Miss John Glenn"  then you get something that sounds like a combination between a famous American astronaut and a southern belle.

Although, as I was drawing this I realized that "Old Miss John Glenn" sounds more like, well, and old miss.  So I did this...

Josh said this was creepy.  D'awww... that man can flatter with the best of them.

Perpetual State of Planning

Most everything I've managed to produce in the last several days makes me shudder.

I'm still attempting to plot out a particular illustration based on a favorite childhood memory.  I want to do something with an honest-to-goodness foreground, middle ground, and back ground unlike most things I do.  I'm trying to plan it out so that it's actually successful... also unlike most things I do.

I'm struggling quite a bit with laying out a good composition while still including all the elements I want to include.  I decided to put the compositional conundrum aside today to sketch some of the individual elements themselves.

I do not excel at drawing cars so I decided to give that a shot.  It's a'ight, I guess.

Hello, Again.

As it turns out, I haven't produced anything worth posting in the last (almost) week... so... I haven't posted anything in the last (almost) week.  I'm in the midst of a "waste of space" phase that will, as it usually does, eventually pass me over.

Oh, I've done things... stuff... various and sundry sketches, half-heartedly hashed out here and there. I have an idea for an illustration that I've been picking around on the edges of for a week now.  It involves a favorite childhood memory of mine and I've been trying to find a style to settle on.  So here are some more exploratory kid sketches pertaining to that.

How do you simplify a Cyberman enough to keep the integrity/overall look of the character but still allow the design to be feasibly cut out of vinyl and stuck to a car window?

First, for the uninitiated, the "Cybermen" are baddies from Doctor Who:

Second, my sister-in-law has a business designing vinyl decals and she needs Cybermen!  So my challenge existed in making a recognizable Cyberman but using simple shapes so as not to melt her cutting machine.

Here's what I came up with.  It's rough still, but I think it'll work.  I may add another shape behind the "knee" area... not sure yet.

In the several days it's been since I last posted, I've compiled some mostly pathetic sketches for an idea I'm idea-ing right now.  I won't get into a lengthy explanation just yet because I'm not even sure if I can make it work or not.  It involves kids so I've tried to do some kid sketches the last few days in an attempt to nail down what I want my characters to look like.

I'm tempted to say that I "finished" this.  To put it more succinctly, I "gave up on it."  It's not that I don't like it... I do... I'm just so weary of looking at it and picking at it that I just decided to be done.

So... ta-da, I suppose.

It's nice to have this "given up on" because it means one more thing done that I don't have pinging around in my brain.  I've been hopping back and forth between things without being able to concentrate solely on just one and that drives me nutty.

The Hobbit:Revenge of Sarah

I like to think that I'm a relatively articulate person.  Just because I like to think that, however, doesn't make it true.  Sometimes (i.e. a lot) I just start talking without thinking and before I know it I've gone and said something that comes back to haunt me.

Case in point: While talking with friends about music the other night my words jumped out of my mouth in the form of "I'm, like, way into Elbow right now."  I died a little inside the instant I heard myself say it.  (By the way, Elbow is a, like, totally rockin' British indie band that I'm, like, way into right now.)

My friend Ross (who also has one of these new-fangled blog thingees) turned my momentary lack of articulation into an entire post wherein he reviewed an Elbow album.

You can read that blog post here.  Go ahead, I'll wait...

Done? Alright.  You may be wondering why that post (which really isn't that derogatory) might inspire me to exact revenge on my dear friend Ross.  I assure you that it's not just that post but the culmination of many, many, manymanymany things.  Things like reminding me of his hate for my beloved Pittsburgh Steelers; things like needling me for my enthusiasm for certain British actors with cumbersome names.

Reader, he has it coming.

But first, some back story... Ross is married to a lovely, intelligent woman named Alexis who is a fan of The Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit.  Ross really doesn't like these two franchises.  Really.  I certainly like them but not to the point where I can map out the family trees of tertiary characters or anything.  My aforementioned enthusiasm for "certain British actors" has led me to be more than mildly interested in this latest installment (yet another teasing point).  But Ross just really, really dislikes Hobbits.

He dislikes them so much that I thought he'd like to be drawn as one.

Just A Doodle

I attempted to redraw yesterday's chicken with arms but nothing special came out of the attempt.  Instead, I just started doodling faces and came up with this.

This is the second time this week that I've drawn something that I don't recognize myself in.  That's always excellent.

Armed & Delicious

Josh walked into my office last night and said:

"Chickens... with arms."

... and walked out.

This is one of the many reasons that I'm in love with this man.

Am I still working on this?  Yes. Yes, I am.

Haven't I been working on this for a while?  Yep.

Am I almost done? Ish.

Whatever This Is

While I haven't posted anything since Thursday of last week, I have been working.  However, I haven't done anything really worthy of sharing...  I mean really not worthy... like, you'd thank me for not embarrassing myself, worthy.

Today's been a weird day.  At work this morning while walking from my car to the building, my foot found the single, solitary patch of ice that remained on the sidewalk.  After wrenching my right ankle, I went crashing down onto my left knee, embedding the pattern of the concrete in my skin during the process.  My Doctor Who coffee mug (what?) went flying but, miracle of miracles, only a tablespoon or so of coffee was sacrificed to the angry gods of winter.

It wasn't the twisted ankle, the scraped knee, or the wounded pride that was tragic... what would've been tragic is the senseless loss of coffee on a Monday morning. THAT would've sent me over the edge.

A plus for working at a healthcare facility is that there are nurses on-site who can neosporin-and-bandage-up the evidence of my astonishing lack of grace.

SO.... what does this have to do with today's drawing?  Absolutely nothing.  I just wanted to whine about it.

I started out today's drawing wanting to flesh out some sort of personification of winter, that gluttonous bully who's fed for too long on the tears of its helpless victims.  I found myself not hitting that mark but I kept drawing anyway and sort of ended up with this... whatever "this" is.

Some kind of troll?  I have no idea.  He's sort of a creeper, inn'he?  I guess I like it primarily because it doesn't look like I drew it.  I always love drawings of mine that I don't recognize myself in.  They're very rare.
