Day 454 - Department of Redundancy Department

This again!

I'm so scatterbrained with this picture.  I can't concentrate on one particular piece of it for any length of time.  I'm still trying to decide if I even like it or not.

It's still a mess at this point.  Don't judge too harshly.

Day 453 - More Progess

Today, my beloved Pittsburgh Steelers lost out at a chance at the playoffs despite winning their last game of the season.  Now begins the time of year where I have a football-shaped hole in my heart.

While listening to the game today on the radio, I did some anatomy drawings from several books I picked up from the library.  I had figure drawing class twice a week, every week, two semesters per year for four years in college... but, since I've been out of college for almost 10 years now, I've gotten a taaaaaad bit rusty.

You don't need to see those attempts to knock the rust off...

I did put some dark values in on my Christmas illustration, though.  This is a long way from being done but it's some progress!

Day 452 - It Went A Little Something Like This...

A few days ago my dear spouse suggested that I draw this... a taco-shaped taco truck.  The resulting drawing was as its title suggests: Lame.

Sometime in the middle of this afternoon I sent Josh an email saying only "Drawing idea! Aaaaand GO!"  He suggested a revisit of the taco-shaped taco truck that sells truck-shaped tacos.

Nope.

Instead of drawing his drawing idea I drew him telling me about his drawing idea.

Day 451 - Sugar Rush

It's been a busy last couple o' days around here.  I drew* a lot.

Unfortunately, I had to go back to work today.  I decided to do a mediocre drawing of a mug of candy canes that are on my counter for passers-by.

Marvel at the asymmetry of that mug, kids.  Breathtaking.

*for the purposes of today's blog, "drew" shall now be defined as "ate my weight in cookies."

Day 450 - Awww, Shucks

I did this adorably adorable overly cute sketch today.

I thought I'd try tinting my sketch for some quick color.  It's ok, I guess!
I believe that you won't be hearing from me until Thursday as tomorrow is Christmas Eve and all... too busy to draw, you know.

Day 449 - It's Rough

Before and after the Steelers game today, I threw some base color on my "me as a kid" drawing.  I haven't decided if any good can come of it yet... we'll see.

Day 448 - LAME

L is for my LACK of imagination today.
A is for the ABSOLUTE lack of mental acuity I currently possess.
M is for... Mmmmreally not creative at all.
And E?  E is for... Eh.

I've been so, so busy these last two weeks with Christmas goings-on that I haven't had much time to just sit and be weird and be creative.  Today, my brain is on autopilot, performing only the most necessary functions like staying awake (barely), telling my lungs to breathe and inexplicably playing Elbow's "Hotel Istanbul" on constant repeat.

So when I asked Josh for a drawing idea and he said "a literal Taco Truck - a taco-shaped truck" I jumped at it, thinking I'd have no problem doing something fun with that.

As it turns out... No.

First attempt? Boring, not interesting... in a word: LAME.

Second attempt? Not as lame but still firmly planted within the boundaries of the Land of Lame.

Day 446 - Good Intentions

You know what they say about good intentions...

I've been here in my office since approximately 7:00 this evening trying to accomplish some sort of artwork of some kind.  However, like a child with a shiny set of keys, I was continually distracted by The Internet, playing with the cat, remembering a box of chocolate someone gave me, suddenly needing a cup of tea, etc, etc... So here it is 9:34 PM EST and I've got Not Much to show for myself.

I did tweak/mess with/probably not improve upon last night's sketch. For the record, I realize that my "me as a kid" is missing an arm.

Day 445 - Something New

I'm blessed to have had a ridiculously happy childhood surrounded by people who loved me an awful lot (I'm also immensely blessed to have an adulthood that goes much the same way).  As is the case for most kids, Christmas was always an extra ridiculously happy time.

The way Christmas worked in my family was as follows:  On Christmas Eve my immediate family (my grandmother who lived with us, my parents and I) did the whole traditional Italian Christmas Eve dinner complete with smelts and nasty stuff with bits of cabbage in it and all manner of things that I had no stomach for as a kid.  I would eat one thing and one thing only: my grandmother's spaghetti aioli.  How did I accrue enough kid-energy to make it through Christmas?  Cookies at my other grandmother's house.

You see, I'm an only child but I have a lot of cousins... 11 to be exact... and we'd aaaaaall cram into my paternal grandmother's tiny, tiny home on Christmas Eve to eat our weight in peanut butter cup cookies and lady fingers while we basked in the endless shower of wrapping paper that invaded the entire house.  Those are some of my happiest childhood memories.  The old-school, large colored Christmas lights on the outside of the house, reflecting off of the snow, are a vivid part of those memories.

When I was still young enough to believe in Santa (kids, if you're reading this, Santa is real - I just got too grown up to be any fun anymore) the fifteen minute trip home from the evening's festivities was always spent looking up at the sky.  I thought I'd try and illustrate this... I'll of course fall woefully short of what's in my head but I can try anyway.

Here are some sketchy, sketchy starts I made in the thinking process.  One of them is done solely with my non-photo blue pencil so I apologize for the quality.  I thought I'd draw myself as a kid (complete with my very 80's Dorothy Hamill haircut) standing on the step outside of my grandmother's house in Grindstone, Pennsylvania.

This may well join the pile of things I've never pursued further if it doesn't progress as I want it to.

Day 444 - Bah!

At this otherwise jolly time of year there usually comes for me one day at work that's so bad, so heinous... one day that's so chock full of funkitude where everything goes wrong that I feel like it's somehow being engineered by a sadistic puppet master.

TODAY, friends, was that day.

The only saving grace was the long lunch with coworkers at the Cheesecake Factory... and ensuing acquisition of that establishment's signature dessert.

I worked on Adorable Godzilla again this evening but I'm not even going to post my progress because it doesn't resemble progress to anyone but me (and even then...).  Had it not been for the availability of another episode of Cabin Pressure on BBC's website I wouldn't have worked at all.  I'll take motivation anywhere I can get it.

Appropriately enough, Blogger doesn't seem to want to accept my usual font and insists on publishing in THIS font instead.

Day 443 - Wherein I Still Cannot Draw Cats

My beloved Pittsburgh Steelers are playing this evening.  As a result, I claimed that I wasn't going to draw tonight - I was just going to take the night off and watch the game.  But nowadays it makes me itchy to NOT draw so I gave Charlie another shot.

She was parked pretty solidly on Josh's lap so I figured she was unlikely to move since he had the electric blanket turned on high.  I was correct.

I don't know what it is about cat anatomy (catnatomy?) that doesn't sync with my mind muscles... just can't ever seem to make it happen.

Day 442 - Yet Another Godzilla

I suppose that technically it's the same Godzilla is always was... I just continue to work on it.

My progress has been exceedingly slow on this but I might as well show you what I've got.  I've been struggling to inject a little life into the color as it was getting too flat before.  I've only just started that on his head so the rest of the body is still in transition.

I'm also trying to get some kind of texture on there as well.  Some people are so good at textures... Meanwhile, I have no idea what I'm doing.

Day 441 - Stay Still, Charlie

Today I took a half day and Josh and I skipped our jolly selves down to our friendly neighborhood post office where the always chipper postal elves informed us that they were not in fact doing passport applications today even though they told us on the phone 20 minutes prior that they WERE.  We waved our wands full of Christmas cheer and persuaded the always happy, never ever grumpy government workers that they should stop being a cotton-headed ninny muggins and PROCESS OUR PASSPORT APPLICATIONS. And do you know what, kids? They did! It's a Christmas miracle!

I could say that I've been so busy with various Christmas-related activities over the last few days that I haven't had much time for silly things like drawing.  I could tell you that and what you'd really hear me saying is "I'm terribly lazy!"  And that would be true.

I worked more yesterday on my godzilla drawing but since not much progress was made I figured I'd spare you having to play the "What's Different?" game between that and the last version I posted (answer: not much).

Between sparring with surly postal workers and other actually fun things I did today, I only had the time to draw Charlie - who, sensing that stillness was paramount, decided to move every 5.7 seconds so that drawing her was almost impossible.

Day 439 - White Elephant

Every year our group of friends has a White Elephant gift exchange.  Some peoples' White Elephant exchanges are polite and the gifts are nice... We don't have one of those.

Some of the gifts that have featured prominently in past years include adult-sized, sock monkey footie pajamas, a wooden woman's head with the name "Rosa" painted on the side, and a box of burnt out light bulbs.

A friend suggested yesterday that, in preparation for this evening's White Elephant Extravaganza, I draw an elephant surrounded by the more famous past gifts but I didn't have the time or mental energy to make that happen.

I did however draw an elephant today.  It's not really meant to visually represent anything other than an overly cute baby elephant but, since I didn't remember that last time I drew an elephant, I thought I'd give it a shot.

In case you're wondering, Josh and my contribution to this year's "celebration" include a "Seashells Playing Poker" sculpture made entirely out of shells, a recorder/flute that Josh found at work and a sheet of "Who's 30?!" stickers (complete with monkey in a birthday hat) from when I turned 30 two years ago.

Day 438 - Mind Your Own Business

The business cards that I currently use are from the "BB" era - Before Blog.  While they do depict a bipedal, green eyeball sporting a fez, I think it's time to move on.  On the back there's also an older illustration of mine that's decent but I've improved leaps and bounds in the last 438 days and my business card should reflect that.

I'm still trying to decide what it is I want to do with it.  My only requirement at this point is to have it be double sided.

Here are a few ideas I've tossed around.  One features me and my hair, which I think is a defining feature so why not have it on my card?  This sketch isn't an accurate representation of my face but you get the idea...

The second is my Adorable Godzilla which I'm currently in love with... the back is the original drawing (which I'm not technically even done with yet) and the front is a cropped, front-facing view of his face with my contact info.

I'm going to throw together a few mock ups of these and see which one works best.

Day 437 - Season's Greetings

I have some gift cards that I need to mail to Florida where my sister-in-law and her family live.  I figured that I'd spiff up the envelope a bit before I mailed them off.

I did much the same last year when I mailed some cards to my in-laws.  In both instances I shouldn't have used a yellow envelope but it's all I had, you know.

Day 435 & 436 - We Wish You a Merry Josh Wells

In continuing the Josh Wells Christmas Carol theme I give you...

Josh Wells the Red Nosed Reindeer:

And what could be interpreted as either "Jingle Wells" or "Silver Wells"

How many more of these am I going to do?  I don't know!  I may have to take it easy on the man now that I found out that, in place of buying each other Christmas gifts, we're taking a trip to the UK next year for our 10th anniversary.  That's a pretty amazing Christmas gift... I may have to stop drawing Josh's face on inanimate objects.

Friday, December 6, 2013

Day 434 - Have a Holly Jolly Josh Wells

There are many things that I do to... let's say "add color" to the every day lives of Josh and myself.  One of those things is to insert his name into any song, commercial jingle, or phrase that will take it.  His very short, two-syllable "Josh Wells" transitions nicely into MANY MANY places.

It's that magical time of year where poor Josh has to endure his interpolated moniker in a myriad of Christmas carols.  I figured, why not draw 'em as well as sing 'em!?

I decided to kick things off with "A Josh Wells In a Pear Tree."

Josh first reaction to this was "Is that what a pear tree really looks like?"  It's a tree... it's got pears... pear tree!

Do you have any Josh Wells Christmas Carols to suggest? Please note that I'm always open to suggestions.  I'll accept "Joshua" as well as "Josh" and first and last names don't necessarily have to be used together.

Aaaaaaand go!

Day 432 & 433 - Defies Explanation

I did actually draw yesterday.  The only thing I drew were mediocre doodles and I feel like I've been doing this long enough now that I don't have to post the really horrendous stuff.

Moving on to farm animals...

Goats.  The same general group of folks that brought you the inspiration for this were once again the catalyst for today's drawing.  I'll make no attempt to explain myself only to say that the goat joke to regular conversation ratio was highly skewed yesterday evening.

I hear what you're saying: "Sarah, that goat looks suspiciously like Djali from Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and to that I'll reply with a "Look over there at that giant water buffalo!" and run away.

Day 431 - I Apologize In Advance

I'm not Catholic but the current Pope seems like a pretty cool guy.  A little nugget I heard on the news today made me giggle, though.  Apparently, Pope Francis was a bouncer at a nightclub when he was in college.

That was too good of a visual to pass up.

Day 430 - So THIS Happened...

Scroll back a few days and you'll find several references to an outlandishly insane drawing request I received.  I'm finally ready to show it to you... I think.

But first, in the interest of sharing the blame, I have to explain myself...

I was recently having a conversation with my friends Scott and Ross about something we'd talked about in Bible study that night.  As is the custom, several odd phrases that were stumbled upon in the Old Testament were combined and a drawing was suggested.  The root of this drawing is the phrase "pots of meat" and the word "pious".

Scott suggested I draw a "pious pot of meat."  I asked him how I'd visually indicate that the pot of meat was pious.  At this point Ross joined the conversation and things went awry.

Fifteen minutes later what I ended up with (to the tune of "Things You'd Find Airbrushed Onto the Side Of A Van") were the following criteria that this drawing must meet:
  • The aforementioned "pot of meat" - but on fire. Because... why not?
  • A wizard whose name is "Pious" as indicated by a name tag
  • A Flock of Seagulls haircut and a handlebar mustache.
  • A tiny hat with "wizard stuff" on it
  • Rock and roll fingers
  • Mountains and a wolf howling at the moon (in keeping with the "things from the side of a van" theme
I'm typing this and realizing that exactly THREE people will find this funny: myself, Ross, and Scott. Make that four... Josh thought it was funny because he's a lovely, supportive spouse.

On my first pass with this drawing, something happened to my Painter file and the entire color portion was corrupted so I had to start over.

This is sloppy, this is quick... but I did it.

Day 429 - And We're Back!

You may have noticed that I took a few days off... I'm not sorry for it.

Wednesday through yesterday were spent with Josh's family in North Carolina where we participated in that most American of excuses to over-indulge: Thanksgiving.

I did draw a few things for my seven-year-old nephew but he kept them so I don't have proof of the Lego helicopter I drew or Uncle Josh riding grandpa's motorcycle that I sketched for him.  Seven is that magical age where everything Aunt Sarah draws elicits a "Wow!" and Aunt Sarah was grateful for the mini ego trip.

It was lovely to not think about drawing for a few days, though.  If ever there was an excuse for a day off yesterday was it.  Between our nine hour drive back to Ohio AND the auspicious occasion of my 32nd birthday there was NO WAY I was picking up a pencil.

Today, however... back to it.  I had to get the cover for my work publication done by tomorrow.  I scrapped my idea from a few days back and went with this instead.  I'll again remind you that it's reproduced on a copy machine (to my immense displeasure) so I don't work that hard on blending, etc, since that'll all be lost.

Bonus picture from our road trip... Me with a hook I befriended at a Tractor Supply Co. store outside of Louisa, Kentucky.

Day 428 - Nothing! Absolutely Nothing!

Ok, here's the thing... I worked a bit tonight on last night's drawing.  I didn't make enough progress that I felt it was necessary to repost what was already not a great drawing.

So! You don't get anything this evening AND you won't for the next few days because of Thanksgivingyish type activities that I'll be partaking in... plus Saturday is my birthday and I'm not working on my birthday!

See you next month!

Days 426 & 427 - Losses and Laziness

Remember my drawing request of epic proportions?  Yesterday, I sat down to put some final touches on it only to find that my Painter file was corrupted and half of the color had disappeared.

Because I'm a drippy artist-type I sometimes forget to do common sense things like saving multiple versions of the same drawing.  Fortunately, my line drawing was still intact.  Had that disappeared, my anguished cries would've echoed across the globe.

You still don't get to see it yet... not 'til I'm done.  And heck, I've built it up so much that when I do finally post it you're response will be "Oh... that's it?"

Moving on!

It's high time I got my little drawing for my work publication done since I'll be Thanksgivinginging it up this weekend.  This isn't done... this just just a bunch of basic, boring shapes that need some life injected into them but it's all I felt like accomplishing tonight.

Day 424 & 425 - Switcheroo

Do you remember how in my post from several days ago I mentioned that I had received a drawing request of such epic proportions that it was cause for alarm? Well, I'm working on that drawing and have been for several days.  To the two gentlemen who requested it, I swore to not reveal any part of it until it was finished.

It's Saturday and I had to fit a viewing of the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special into my schedule.  All that considered, I spent a significant amount of time today working on "this drawing".

You may have noticed that I didn't post anything yesterday.  This was not on purpose... I genuinely forgot until I had already shut everything down for the evening.  I drew quite a bit yesterday and, since I've sworn not to show the other drawing until it's done, I'm going to post what I drew yesterday.

It's yet another sketch for yet another cover for our publication at work.

Day 423 - Not Yet

Last night I received a drawing request of such epic proportions, of such mind-numbing magnitude, of almost insurmountable levels of attainability that I fear I won’t be able to properly convey it in a manner worthy of its grandeur. I can’t disappoint those who've requested it after they've placed such a venerable task in such unworthy hands, so I bravely venture forward into the unknown realms of wizards with Flock of Seagulls haircuts, keytars, and handlebar mustaches.

In the meantime, here's a boring ol' still life.  My Thursday morning art class students were busy painting so to kill some time between instruction I drew what they were painting while sitting off to the side.

Day 422 - Eeeeeh

I'm starting to think I'm not going to be doing my own Christmas card this year.  I can't make it happen.

Earlier today, before this conclusion was drawn, I attempted to make it happen... unsuccessfully.

I kinda sorta didn't want to post these today but it's all I've got.

Day 421 - Silly Goose

Because my typical mental state is that of a six year old's, I use the phrase "silly goose" quite a lot.

I know a lot of silly geese.  I calls 'em like I sees 'em.

Since most everything I do is to make myself laugh (anyone who cares to join me is welcome to) I did this today.

A silly goose.

Monday, November 18, 2013

Day 420 - Who Wants To See THIS Again?!

I worked on my Adorable Godzilla yet again this evening because the inspiration well was running on the dry side and this is all I could muster up.

I almost didn't do a post this evening for fear of being redundant but I figured if I didn't you'd be worried, you'd call the police, a task force would be assembled, etc, etc, and boy would I have been embarrassed. That's not to say that I don't appreciate your concern even though it borders a bit on the obsessive side.

Calm it down.

SO... this... Remember how I said no outline this time?  Yeah, forget that.

Saturday, November 16, 2013

Day 418 & 419 - Adorable Godzilla II: The Recolor

Once upon a time (in August) I drew what I affectionately refer to as "Adorable Godzilla".  I've attempted to throw some color on ol' A.G. but have been unsuccessful.

Much of what I do relies pretty heavily on outlines so I decided to kick 'em to the proverbial curb, throw a limited amount of caution to the wind and paint it without the aid of a black outline.

Clearly, this is nowhere near done yet but I sorta like where it's headed.

UPDATE - 11/17

Since I worked on the same thing today as I did yesterday I decided to consolidate so as not to waste two posts on very similar images.

I spent the better part of my Sunday cooking for my family and yelling at the Steelers game.  These two things left me bereft of any energy (I yell a lot at football games) so all I did was a continuation of yesterday's work.

Day 417 - Gotta Start Thinking

It's November 15 and if I have any aspirations on designing my own Christmas card again this year I'd better start thinking in that direction.

This needs to be drawn much better than it is, but I like the idea.

Day 416 - Strange Request

I've been goaded into another strange drawing by my husband.

Our friend Mike mentioned several things about his childhood today such as attempting to "dig to space" and that he had an imaginary friend that happened to be tree sap (appropriately named "Sappy").

Josh was all over that drawing request and after I made sure that Mike wouldn't slug me for drawing it I did this...

It's not everyday that one has to decide how to personify tree sap.

Day 415 - The Great Debate

It's once again that magical time of year when Josh and I reawaken our annual debate about reindeer noses and antlers on cars.  An Example.

In one corner you have Josh, who thinks that reindeer noses and antlers on cars are funny and whimsical.  In the other corner is me... who finds them silly and mildly irritating.

It cannot be said that I don't appreciate whimsy.  Even just a cursory glace at the kinds of things I typically draw will prove that.  But reindeer antlers and a nose on your car?  C'mon.

Monday morning, while driving to work, I made my first sighting of the year.  When I told Josh about it, he suggested that I draw a deer with side view mirrors and a car bumper on its nose.

I decided I didn't want the bumper on its nose... so we have this instead.

Why does everything I draw have to have a sardonic expression?  That may actually say a lot about me.

Day 414 - Meh & Eh

Geez, was I busy today.

I love my job, I'm great with people, I can talk to anyone and on the surface I appear to be an extrovert.  In reality, I'm an introvert who's a good actress.  By the end of a typical work day I'm drained and on days like today I want nothing more than to hide somewhere with a book and not speak.

BUT... Josh and I had a date night planned for this evening and I wasn't going to let a little misanthropy stop me!

All of this is, of course, an elaborate yarn I've woven to tell you that what I've drawn today isn't great because I did it in, like, the five minutes of free time that were allotted me today.

I drew a face.  Didn't want to put a normal head with it; drew a moon around it. Bada-boom. Drawing.

Day 413 - It Doesn't Look Like Much

Years ago, I saw a piece of art with the following quote: "I once had a garden filled with flowers that grew only on dark thoughts but they needed constant attention and one day I decided I had better things to do." That had quite an effect on me and I wrote it down and hung onto it with the intention of doing my own version.

I cleaned my office this past weekend and found that quote along with some preliminary sketches that I did that were hiding in the mulch pile of papers I've accumulated.  They're not great anymore so I did an updated sketch...

As my title suggests, it doesn't look like much but it's a start.

Day 412 - More Things to Color

You might've noticed that I skipped yesterday.  I had a busy Saturday and decided to give myself a break.

Back to it today, though.  I picked up where I left off a little over a week ago with coloring this particular drawing.  I just put down base colors this evening.

Day 411 - It's The Least I Can Do

My most excellent husband Josh often finds himself as my drawing subject.  He's my favorite person, my best friend, I love him, I respect him... I draw silly pictures of him for retaliatory purposes.

I'm not a fan of facial hair... especially not on Josh.  This is an excellent example of what can happen when Josh stops shaving for a few days.  Well... He's stopped again and has evaded my demand for answers.

I made the mistake several days ago of telling him he looked "sort of cute" with a little stubble.  I've known this man for 17 years and I should've realized the ground I was giving up in the Beard Battle by paying him that compliment.  Then someone else told him that it looked good on him and there's been no stopping him since that point.

He thinks he's adorable.

In the interest of full disclosure, he is adorable but he's been strutting around like like a silly bearded peacock so I decided action needed to be taken.

THIS is my (somewhat) exaggerated interpretation of what Josh has been doing.  I inadvertently made him look more like a 15 year old rather than his actual 36 years but the attitude is correct.

Day 410 - Done

It's sometimes difficult to determine when something I'm working on is DONE.  Typically, it's when I can stand back and be satisfied with my progress and I feel that any more additions would be overkill. Sometimes, as is the case with this painting, it's when I'm just plain tired of looking at it.

This monster has been taking up valuable real estate in my office for far too long.  I picked at it tonight and I just don't think any more work is would make it better.  My aunt (who it was painted for) loved it as of the last time she saw it so that's good enough for me.

I'll just be happy to get it out of my office, onto her wall and away from my line of sight for a while.

Day 409 - Just Doodlin'

I had zero free time today with which to draw.  Wednesday night is church group night so I doodled during Bible study... I pay very good attention when I'm doodling.

Tuesday, November 5, 2013

Day 408 - Giant Squids Love German Food

...or so I've heard.

Remember this from last year? Tonight, Josh and took our annual trip to Schmidt's restaurant in Columbus and did our usual walk up the street to The Book Loft.  I figured while we were there I might as well draw on the place mat again... this year it was a giant squid... or octopus... or some manner of many-tentacled sea beast who has somehow made it 500 miles inland to land-locked Ohio.

Day 407 - It's Done(ish)

"Done(ish)" because someday I'm going to be a more competent wielder of backgrounds.  I don't quite have the ability to employ a simple background that suggests a street or trees or whatever... I need to work on that.

For now, there's this!  I'm pretty happy with it.  I might've gone a little blender-happy but I have a version that's not blurred at all so if I ever change my mind I have a backup.

Day 406 - This Again

Are you tiring of this drawing? No? Good! 'cause here it is again!

To be honest, I didn't even want to work on this at all today.  Music can be a big motivator for me and today was no exception.  I tend to binge listen to things... meaning, I stumble on an artist or band that I love and I obsessively listen to that one artist or band until I find something else to obsess about and I continue to add to the repertoire of music I love and someday I expect my head will explode from the enormity of it all.

My obsession du jour is the band Elbow, specifically their "Seldom Seen Kid" album.  Wanting to listen to it again made me drag my sorry self into my office to work this evening.

I managed to do some rough shading/highlighting for the first 10 songs before the siren song of my other great love - reading in the bathtub- became too much for me to ignore.
