Day 74 - I Shouldn't Have to Draw On My Birthday

Today is my birthday.  Last week I said to Josh "You know... I think I might take a day off from drawing on my birthday."  He responded by making a face that strongly hinted of his disapproval.  So.... I drew today.

Even at the now decrepit, feeble age of 31 I managed to muster up the energy for a drawing.

(Hey, you kids, get off my blog!) *shakes cane violently*

Day 73 - Single, Silly Squirrel Solicitation

I received a request last night from my friend Ross.  He requested a squirrel with a lion mane... and went on to suggest several other small animals with lion manes.  Josh then suggested I do the opposite... lion with a squirrel's tail and so on.  I didn't go QUITE that far but I did manage the squirrel.

Overall, I like it... but it's a little too adorable. In fact, I'm going to make a one time exception and use a word that I can't stand... The squirrel is a bit "twee".

Who even decided that was a word?  When used, it sounds like you're making fun a lumberjack with a speech impediment.

Day 72 - Bits and Pieces

Today I started some work on yet another project for my sister-in-law.  She has a business doing vinyl cuts and she sometimes gets custom orders that she needs artwork for.  This time around she's been asked to use her already-created vinyls of Daleks from Doctor Who to "EXTERMINATE" a stick figure family.  She needed the exterminated figure, a frightened figure and a pile of post-exterminated stick figure.

Also, I doodled in Bible study tonight (I concentrate well while doodling) so I figured I'd scan that, too.

Day 71 - Finished!

During our trip to North Carolina last week, Josh and I got a book on CD - Ready Player One by Ernest Cline (as read by Will Wheaton).  We got back with four discs to go so that forced me to sit at my computer and work while we finished listening to it.

You didn't really need to know all of that.

My point is, I finished the line work for the Writer cover that I sketched yesterday. (And I highly recommend that book).

Day 70 - Preliminary Stuff

It's time again for me to think about a drawing for the cover of our every-other-month publication at work.  I did a sketchy idea for that today.  I intend to add in some more elaborate snowflakes instead of the "stick snowflakes" that are there now.

Days 65-69 - I'm back!

Josh and I had a lovely visit to North Carolina for Thanksgiving and I DID draw everyday.  Two of those days were days involving 10 hour car trips but I still made it happen.  One day we've got a not great doodle of a cake on the kitchen counter; the next day is a group of boxes that some birthday gifts came in; the next day is a request from my nephew who wanted me to draw the picture on the back of his new LEGO set; and the last are just two days worth of combined doodles.

Day 64 - Another Fast Post...

We're headed out o' town for Thanksgiving so you know what that means... no blog posts until I get back.  But as always, I'll make good on my promise to draw SOMETHING every day and I'll scan the results when I get back.

Between packing/chasing the cat around the house/eating Swiss Rolls tonight, I managed to do a little under painting on my cat from the other night.

Day 63 - Quick Monday Night Entry

I didn't feel like doing much beyond doodling tonight.  I am getting better at drawing faces out of my head, though.

Day 62 - Making Good on My First Request

Josh and I are truly blessed to be a part of a fantastic life group at our church.  We dearly love these people and we're more often than not incredibly silly when we're all in the same room together.  Our group leader, Scott, has been requesting that I draw him for my blog since the start and that request is almost always accompanied by Scott demonstrating exaggerated poses in the style of Roman statuary or something out of an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie.

Well today I finally drew Scott.  I based this picture on his incredibly fantastic Facebook profile picture.

Scott, you're welcome.

Day 61 - Some Color

Yesterday was a hard act to follow... Josh tried to give me some sorry story about how what I drew wasn't actually what he asked for.  My response was "I don't read minds" even though I knew full well what he actually meant by "Sherlock fist fighting Batman."  We all know who the real winner is here, folks.

Anyway... today I started on my Picture-That-Might-Actually-Make-It-To-This-Year's-Christmas-Card (PTMAMITTYCC for all you acronym lovers).  "Might" being the operative word.

As I mentioned the other day, I wasn't happy with the eyes I had originally done so I spent too much time tonight trying to get them right before giving up and just starting on some color.

Day 60 - I Can Only Blame Myself

Today's drawing requires a little back story...

You may recall that yesterday I asked my husband, Josh, to give me an idea for my drawing. "Fish Playing Football!" he said... and I made it so.  Today I asked him for another idea... he turned on me.

I need to first tell you that I'm a fan of BBC's Sherlock and of the most recent installments of the Batman movies. Not to an unhealthy extent... but I immensely enjoy both of them.  Both are well written, fantastically acted and... if I'm to be completely honest... I find both Benedict Cumberbatch and Christian Bale to be... how are the kids saying it nowadays... Dreamy? Let's go with that. Josh (being perfectly secure in the knowledge that I love him and him only - and rightfully so) teases me about this.

Which brings us to today's drawing assignment... Josh requested that I draw "Batman fist-fighting Sherlock"  Do you see what he did there?  He wanted me to draw Christian Bale punching Benedict Cumberbatch in the face (or vice versa).  Not nice.  However, I accepted the challenge and immediately set forth finding a loophole.

How could I get Sherlock to punch Batman in the face (or vice versa) without appeasing my sadistic husband?  Using the aforementioned, more modern versions of Batman and Sherlock was immediately out...  Here's what I came up with:

Great, right?! Old school Batman... WAY old school Sherlock... and Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots for the win!!!  I smirked my way through this entire drawing.

Needless to say I will not be asking my dear spouse for any ideas for awhile now because I have a feeling that David Tennant is next on the chopping block.

Day 59 - Ask and You Shall Receive

I couldn't come up with any acceptable ideas for a drawing today so I asked Josh for one.  After a long pause he said "Fish playing football."

So here you have it...

Yes, I understand that the football (unless somehow weighted for underwater play) would in reality bob right up to the surface.  I put a helmet on my little friend there because I didn't want Aquarium Roger Goodell to fine me for putting my fish in harm's way.

Day 58 - More of the Same

I spent my time this evening finishing up the Futurama project for my sister in law.

That's an incredibly boring sentence but I don't really have anything witty to add to it.

Instead, enjoy this quote from Groucho Marx: "Well, Art is Art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water.  And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does.  Now you tell me what you know."

Day 57 - Lots o' Drawin'

So I finally came up with something to use as a Christmas card illustration... now that it's mid-November... and I might not have time.  So I finally came up with something that I might use NEXT Christmas!

I don't like the eyes... I'll have to work on that.  They remind me of Japanese animation... I am NOT a fan of Japanese animation.  I look forward to your emails.

And I doodled some faces.  Not overly impressive but I'm seeing things come out that I haven't seen for a long time.  They're probably not evident to anyone but me but rest assured, they're there.

Day 56 - All Over the Place.

I bought a hard cover, bound sketchbook and took it to work with me today.  I started out drawing my hand... decided it needed spruced up... and then who knows where I went after that with the mildly deranged looking rabbit and cartoony cat with a beanie.

Day 55 - Things I'm Not Good At #325: Faces

I'm not great at faces.  In the past I've turned down doing caricatures for people because I'm not terrific at drawing a face to intentionally make it look like an actual person.

I need to work on that.

So I did tonight... I just went through a magazine and drew a few faces from ads, etc.  They're not great... it's certainly something I need to practice more.

Day 54 - *whew*

Boy howdy, I just baaaaarely escaped the Picture of Shame today.  I genuinely forgot I hadn't drawn yet until I was about a third of the way through a movie at 10:00 at night.  So here I am, with 56 minutes left to spare of Day 54.  I got some more work done on the project for my sister in law.  It's not much but it's enough.

Josh even came into my office with his iPhone and said "I've got the camera right here if you just want to get it over with."

Day 53 - False Start. 10 Yard Penalty.

I'm a bit on the ADD side tonight.  I tried to do some other color versions of my tea cup and I don't LOVE either one... although, I do see potential in the second one.

I drew some other stuff during the day but I can't show that to you... Christmas gifts and all, you know.

Day 52 - Before & After: Godzilla Edition

Twelve years ago I moved to Columbus Ohio from the Pittsburgh area.  For the majority of those years, Josh and I have an annual trip to German Village in downtown Columbus.  We eat at Schmidt's Sausage Haus and walk several blocks to The Book Loft and make a night of it.  Traditionally we do this in late October but we were running a little late this year and went this evening, finally.

Why am I telling you all of this?  Well, here's what a placemat at Schmidt's looks like:

Let's say you've got some time to kill whilst waiting for your Weiner Schnitzel.  Then maybe Godzilla shows up.*

*This of course is a purely fictional representation of an event that, to my knowledge, has never occurred in the greater Columbus area.

Day 51 - Lame.

Not much to show for myself today, kids.  I had a mega-busy day today and... well... I'm a lame-o and only got time to continue work on my sister-in-law's Futurama pictures.

I feel like I owe you more than just that... so here's a picture of a cute puppy:

You're welcome.

Day 50 - All We Really Are is Squirrels

For reasons I won't elaborate on just yet, Josh requested that I draw a squirrel.  The reason I won't elaborate is because I don't know that I'll go through with finalizing his request.  However, it does involve squirrels and squirrels are yet another item on the long list of Things I Don't Draw Well.  So I did a little squirrel drawin' today... not from life... from work... and my old friend Google Image Search.

Plus I tried to come up with my own "cartoony" version of a squirrel that I may or may not use if and when I move forward with Josh's request.

Day 49 - Quick and Easy

In my Day-Quil induced haze today I managed to draw the last two of four Futurama characters for my sister in law.

Not much else to say about it, really...

Day 48 - Sick Still Life

It got to be about 8:45 this evening and I still hadn't drawn yet.  I'm still fighting this cold. I still feel like crud but I reeeeeeally didn't want to say "Well, I've drawn x-amount of days in a row and I only skipped once because I was sick."  So I did a quick sketch of what was in front of me on the coffee table.

Day 47 - Still sick, drew anyway.

My sister-in-law has commissioned me to do some characters from Futurama for a project she's working on.  I'm not that familiar with the show so I had to once again call upon my dear friend, Google Image Search to help me.  She's having me do Fry, Zoidberg, Hypnotoad and Nibbler.  The latter two I worked on today...

Day 46 - Sick Day II: Return of the Head Cold

I attempted to go to work today but ended up leaving at noon and spending the rest of the day on the couch with Netflix streaming.  I pulled out one of my handy-dandy art nouveau books to copy something out of as my imagination was shot.

I chose this drawing by Louis John Rhead:

Well, in my (in)capable hands it looks like Art Nouveau meets Disney.  It's decent for a sick person, anyway.

Incidentally, my couch time afforded me the chance to watch Clueless for the first time, catch up on my rewatching of previous Doctor Who seasons and all three installments of a lovely mini series called To The Ends of the Earth (Which in the interest of full disclosure, I watched not for my interest in Victorian-era British Naval drama but because Benedict Cumberbatch was in it.)

Day 45 - Sick Day

Today was truly the first day since I've started this that I REALLY didn't want to draw anything.  I have a cold for the first time since March and I stayed home sick from work today.  I finally convinced myself to at least doodle while I was parked on the couch.
