Day 44 - "We're just not popcorn people."

"We're just not popcorn people" is what I said to a friend at the movies yesterday when she asked if Josh or I wanted some popcorn.  Popcorn people stayed in my head.

Now wait... I know what you're thinking... my popcorn person looks like the long lost, illegitimate brother of Mr. Peanut.  He does.  So that's why he could also be a redneck:

...and maybe he skis in his spare time...

Day 43 - More Miscellany

You know, any artist/photographer/knife thrower/welder/what have you will tell you that they don't do amazing stuff EVERY day of the week.  So in response to the completely imaginary criticism from you readers that I've totally fabricated in every way... I feel like I have to defend myself.  Some days... a lot of days... it's just not happenin'.  My point is, is that I'm at least drawing something everyday even if it's very rarely fabulous.

So now that I've lowered today's bar to a subterranean level... I did some more thinking-in-thumbnails about Christmas card layouts and then some random doodles for which I have no explanation other than I was in a sinus headache induced haze.

Why yes, that IS an eyeball "plant" that's sprouted two feet, why do you ask?

Day 42 - Miscellany

I have some random things for you today, lovely reader.  Another blank slate in the form of a gourd was put in front of me with the request that it be... befaced? Defaced? I added a face to it!

And tonight I picked more at my color teacup... I still can't decide if I should stick with what I'm doing or start over.  I might continue to play with it more.

Days 40 & 41 - Strange Requests and Bad Doodles.

I spent this weekend at a retreat center helping out a friend of mine who has an awesome ministry for middle schoolers.  It was their annual conference and about 100 kids attended.  I got to know a lot of great people from my own church who I never get to interact with, otherwise.  While I was telling them about this blog I was asked if I took requests.  I said that I did.  The following is the results of those requests... and they're all from the same person:

1. A snowman that's actually made out of pumpkins:

2. A hand reaching out of a box of popcorn:

3. A raccoon making a peace sign, holding nunchuks riding a dolphin.

And on a FAR less interesting note... here's a tree I sketched.

After all the craziness of this weekend, I'm thoroughly exhausted... but I still hadn't drawn today (Sunday).  So I tried to doodle.  Tried.  TRIED.  I'm tired. It's bad.  It is what it is.

Day 39 - Revenge of the Spilling Food

I'm finally getting to my updates here after my weekend away.  Yes, I DID draw every day!  Friday at work... for lack of ideas... I did more spilling food.

I apologize for the page crease.  It was in my bag all weekend and got dinged around.

Day 38 - Oh Drawing, Where Art Thou?

You may have noticed that I didn't follow up with a second drawing yesterday.  Thank goodness for Sharpie Pumpkins.

I forgot to note in yesterday's blog that I'll be away from a computer/scanner until Sunday afternoon. I will NOT however, be away from a sketchpad and pencils.  Much like this time last month, I solemnly swear to draw every day and post the results when I get back on Sunday.

I feel like I can't leave you without something today... How do you feel about flamingos?  Here's a flamingo from my freshman year of college (arguably the last time I drew for 38 consecutive days - and it shows).  I have a lot of ground to make up.

...to be fair I also did this over the course of several days whereas most of what I've done here are just quickie daily sketches.

Day 37 - To Be Continued?

Today is yet another busy day.  Work all day then I'll be out for the better part of this evening.  So (for now) I'm going to post a picture of some pumpkins I was recruited to do at work this morning.  This hopefully will not be ALL I draw today but in case it is... I'm set.

Although after yesterday's questionable entry I may be skating on thin ice here. :)

Day 36 - Shenanigans.

My husband called shenanigans on me for today's drawing.  I suspect the man is positively foaming at the mouth for the chance to engineer a Picture of Shame.  Clearly, this viewpoint has skewed his judgement.

I had a busy day today at work, came home and made/ate dinner and headed back out to church.  I didn't have a lot of time to draw today.  It got to be about 3:00 this afternoon when I thought "Oh shoot... I haven't drawn anything yet today!" My panic-induced mind couldn't conjure up anything properly whimsical and/or fabulous.  So behold... Today's drawing of the day:

When I start this blog I never, ever said that I'd daily produce a finished, masterpiece, museum quality piece. They ain't all winners, folks.

Plus... plus... last night I was cutting up some hot peppers to freeze before they went bad.  I got some under my right thumbnail and it's been stinging all day.  I was INJURED, you guys.  Steps away from being maimed... I think you all should consider yourselves LUCKY that I even did anything today. LUCKY.

Speaking of luck... better luck tomorrow.

Day 35 - Tape Dispensers: The gateway doodle.

For lack of things to draw today, I started drawing things on my desk at work.  A tape dispenser, when drawn poorly, apparently looks like the head of a tropical bird... and things just went from there.  These are weird but exercised a creative muscle that's only getting stronger every day that I continue this.

Day 34 - Messin' with Color.

Ok, in the interest of full disclosure I did spend a chunk of this evening that could've otherwise been spent working, trying to catch up on the latest season of Doctor Who.  I did still get some work started on coloring my teacup, though, so put the pitchforks and torches away.

I don't really know HOW I want to color my spilling food drawings so I started playing around with some ideas.  Many of those ideas met their end via Control+Z before I started to make a little headway with this.  I'll pick at it a little more in different sections before I decide if it's worth spending a lot of time on or not.  Sort of an interesting start though, I think.

(Also - the off-white halo around the drawing is the paper because it's from a scanned drawing.  Once I'm done with coloring it via Painter, I'll delete that layer and you won't see it anymore.)

Day 33 - Some faces.

I really love the illustrator Brandon Ragnar Johnson (http://www.ragnarama.com/).  He's got a great, really simple, really elegant style.  As a result, it's REALLY hard to draw similarly.  When I've tried to copy his work for practice, I fail miserably.  It's such a simple line that you can't hide behind it... it's either right or it's not.  So before tonight's Steelers game (can't draw DURING the game - that would be ugly) I copied some faces out of a book of his work that I have.

Again, you can learn a lot by copying other artists' work.  By no means am I passing this off as my own - it's 100% copied out of a book.

Day 32 - Field Trip!

"What happened to Day 31?" you ask?  Yes, I am abysmal with numbers but looking back on my list of blog entries, I realized that I have TWO "Day 21"s.  So today's really day 32.

Anyway...

Today's drawing of the day is brought to you by a wall in a house on a farm near Marysville, Ohio.  As I have mentioned, I painted a tree on the bedroom wall of the four year old daughter of some dear friends of mine.  I'm really happy with how it came out.

Painting murals takes a lot out of me... because of that I'm SO using this as today's drawing of the day.

Day 30 - Thinkin' 'Bout Murals

Tomorrow I'm painting a tree on a wall. I'm sort of winging it with this tree on a wall.  It's kind of mushed up in my head somewhere and I'm hopeful that tomorrow when faced with the wall, the tree shall make itself known.  I was just tossing around some last minute ideas today.

I did some other stuff today to but I can't show it to you lovely internet users yet because it's for someone who may possibly read this blog and I don't want them to see it before I give it to them.

Day 29 - Moon and Stars

I expanded my moon and stars from the other day into a sketch for a colored illustration.  I still don't like the stars but I'll work on that.

Wednesday, October 17, 2012

Day 28 - Meh.

I'm having a very meh sort of day today, you guys.  I don't really know why... probably because it's been getting dark so much earlier and with all these laws why can't they make one that requires the sun to stay up in Central Ohio until 9:45 every evening all year 'round?

But I digress...

I tried to get multiple things going today only to stall out before I produced anything substantial.  So, thinking about potential Christmas card stuff,  I played around with Google image search for some art nouveau motifs, etc.  Do not prepare to have your proverbial socks knocked off... like I said, it's a very meh kind of a day.  Better luck tomorrow!

It was either this or the Picture Of Shame and my hair is not compliant today.

Day 27 - reSTARt

I didn't like the stars I drew yesterday.  I redrew them today.

Short and sweet.

I did actually draw more than this today but it's just stuff that I'm doing for some upcoming projects that doesn't really look like much except to me (and even then... eh...)

So... This is what you get for today.  Rejoice and be glad.

Day 26 - Requests!

I got a request (via her mom, of course) from a super cute little gal named Heidi.  She requested that I draw "stars and a moon for the night" and "diamonds" so I combined the two.

I kind of love the moon... I want to turn this into a color illustration at some point.

Day 25 - Retread.

I finally decided on three of the images from the "spillage" "series" to put in my newly remodeled "kitchen" (sorry, got carried away with the "quotes") I've picked the Chinese food (which seems to be everyone's favorite -myself included), the teacup and the ice cream.

Today I drew larger more "finalized" (I meant those ones) versions of the cup and the Chinese food.  I'll eventually toss these in to Painter and color 'em up.

The chopsticks were chopped (booo) off of this one by my shoddy scanner positioning.

Day 24 - Thinkin' About Trees

During the tree post from a few days ago I mentioned that I'd be painting a tree on the wall of the daughter of friends of mine.  They told me they liked the "Swirly" tree so I was playing around with that tonight.

Day 23 - Crazy Cat Lady II

For several years I've been telling myself that I should design my own Christmas card to send to friends and family instead of buying them.  I've never done it.  Well, it's October and I've started that dialog with myself again.  Charlie, our very large and very funny two year old cat would be a good subject for a Christmas card illustrations.  I just played around with some quick ideas today:

Day 22 - Mucha

I've previously mentioned that I really love Alphonse Mucha and art nouveau in general.  Tonight I copied another drawing out of the myriad of Mucha/Art Nouveau books that I have.  Copying things may seem sort of like a cop-out but it actually helps me because I retain quite a bit of what I've drawn and can recycle bits of it in future things.

An interesting thing I noticed tonight is HOW I'm drawing.  Normally, I'll back track my lines and dance around a shape until I find it and everything looks sketchy.  Tonight's drawing was primarily just one line... my hand knew where to take the pencil.  That's very encouraging.

And I would be remiss if I didn't mention that I kept my hands steady despite the fact that I was listening to the Steelers game on the radio and yelling quite a bit during the drawing process.

Day 21 - Three Weeks!

Today marks three weeks that I've successfully kept this up.  It feels really good TO BE ABLE TO SAY THAT!  (I accidentally turned caps lock on there but I thought maybe I'd leave it for emphasis, what do you think?)

Today I decided to draw some random fun stuff (Google Image Search is your friend, kids).  And I learned the following:

1. Jacks, while seemingly simple in design and construction, are actually really hard to draw... correctly... in perspective.  And we all know how good I am with perspective after the wonky plate incident from the other day. *shudder*

2. You can't just do a Google Image Search for "Top" because there appears to be a Korean fellow who uses that name and is quite popular.  Search for "spinning top" instead.

3. The deliciously bejeweled sugary facets of the ever-opulent Ring Pop are super fun to draw.

Day 21 - Color... Something or Other.

I had a difficult time getting anything going tonight.  So I sat down with Painter and decided to play with color combinations.  Not impressive... nothing fantastic... just playing around.

Day 20 - Treerific!

Trees! Not much to say today about trees only that I'll soon be painting a tree on the wall of a four year old's bedroom so I'm sort of thinking about trees...

...and my one guy down there who looks like broccoli with a face.  He can come, too.

I neglected to mention that not all of these are out of my own head... Some of them are brought to you by Google Image Search.  Several of them are my own, several are not.

Day 19 - Finished Product

My cover drawing was needed by tomorrow so, of course, I waited until tonight to get it done.  As I previously stated, it's going to be reproduced (unfortunately) on a copy machine so I'm sorta limited.  Despite that, I think it came out pretty well.

Day 18 - Barely Avoiding the Picture O' Shame

Ok, hear me out... Josh and I left the house this morning at 8:00 AM and drove from our home in Columbus to the nearest IKEA store near Cincinnati (about 90 minutes).  We returned some things left over from our recent kitchen renovation (ourikeakitchen.blogspot.com) and hung around in the store for awhile.  We then drove 90 minutes north to Bellefontaine for a gathering and were there for a few hours.  We then drove the hour back to Columbus and immediately went to the last half of a neighborhood bonfire.  We got back in the door at 8:00 PM.  I had said all day "I still need to draw today" but by the time we got home I was beat...

Did you read all of that?  Good for you.  If you didn't I shall summarize thusly: I was busy today and I'm tired.  BUT the ever-present threat of the Picture O' Shame*  I had to do something.  So I added just a bit to last night's drawing... it's SOMETHING.  Don't you judge me! How much did YOU draw today?! Huh!?

Anyway... I just began shading on the second pumpkin.

* If I don't draw I have to write a statement of my failure and post my picture taken with the statement of failure.

Day 17 - Alterations

I started out trying to draw during quiet periods at work today.  I thought "Flamingos! I love a flamingo! I'll draw flamingos!"  Not so much.  I thought "Westies! I love a Westie! I'll draw Westies!" Not so much.  So I did actually draw at work today but nothing I'm willing to share because I care too much for your well being.  You'll just have to trust that I did it.

So tonight with the accompaniment of some Hornsby's Crisp Apple Hard Cider and some Florence + The Machine I started on my cover for the Village Writer for work.  I fixed the cat face I'd done last week and altered some other things.

Unfortunately, I have to do this for reproduction on a copy machine.  No color and I can't do much gray scale or it just won't show up.  Hence the cross hatching which isn't my favorite.  I actually am really good with color but for whatever reason I haven't done but one colored thing on here yet.  Don't believe me?  You can check out my colored stuff on my website at www.sarahwells.net!  I haven't advertised that yet.

Day 16 - Foodtastic!

I have a small audience now.  How do I know that?  Because I'm getting requests (which is fantastic).  I'll get to that in a second...

I have a talented chef of a friend named Jim who also owns a farm (check them out at Kibby's Family Heirlooms).  Jim took (fake) offense to my blatant disregard of the sanctity of plated food in my "spillage" post a few days ago.  So today - for you Jim - I've done PLATED FOOD.

...and a doughnut...

...and just for clarity's sake, let's say I live in a world full of wonky plates that aren't in the correct perspective.  That'll make this easier for everyone.

Jim's lovely and also talented wife, Leslie, requested that I draw a grill falling to add to my spilling food.  So here's THAT:

Thanks for the inspiration, guys.  Keep it coming. :)

Day 15 - Crazy Cat Lady

Yes, cats... again.  I'm not good at drawing cats and I have a few ideas for things right now that involve cats. I'm really not good at drawing cats' profiles.  They have a very simple yet very easy to mess up slope to their faces... so that's what I worked on today.

And because I had so much fun with all that spilling food the other day, I give you bonus cake... 'cause who doesn't love bonus cake?!

Tuesday, October 2, 2012

Day 14 - I'm having an off day.

After yesterday's relative wellspring of creativity I found myself in a drought today.  Not an excuse... just a fact.  Anyway, I tried multiple times to get something going and came up empty handed.  So tonight I just picked a page from a book of Alphonse Mucha's work and attempted to copy it... poorly.  I left out a tremendous amount of detail but I did SOMETHING which is the whole point...
